Elderly woman killed after vehicle strikes lamp post in Newtownabbey
A PENSIONER died yesterday when the car she was travelling in crashed into a lamp post.
Elsie Magee, from the Newtownabbey area, died in the single vehicle crash.
It happened on the Doagh Road in Newtownabbey.
Aged in her 70s, the pensioner was a passenger in the grey Citroen Berlingo involved in the horrific incident, which happened at a busy junction outside the former Nortel Networks factory.
The driver of the crashed Citroen was given medical assistance by ambulance crews at the scene, but did not require hospital treatment.
The busy Doagh road was closed for a time while police investigated the cause of the fatal crash. It was later reopened to traffic. Yesterday’s tragic death brings to 26 the number of people who have lost their lives on Northern Ireland’s roads so far this year.
By the same date last year, the death toll had reached 23, according to the lateest PSNI statistics.
Police investigating the fatal crash which took place yesterday morning at 10am appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
A police spokesman said: “We are appealing to anyone that may have any information that could assist police with enquiries, or to anyone that was travelling along the Doagh Road at the time, to contact Newtownabbey Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 341 of the 08/06/17.
“Or, alternatively if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
