Murray set to be a dad once again

- BY FRANCESCA GOSLIN

TENNIS star Sir Andy Murray has said he is “very happy” to be expecting his second child with wife Kim.

The 2016 Wimbledon victor lay rumours to rest as he confirmed the news during a press conference for this year’s championships yesterday.

He told reporters: “We’re both obviously very happy and looking forward to it.”

The pair already have a oneyear-old daughter, Sophia, following their marriage in 2015.

Today, Sir Andy will take to the Centre Court to play Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. After pulling out of two warm-up matches earlier in the week due to ongoing hip problems, he assured fans that he will be “fine to play” in the big event.

Asked if the excitement of his new child would affect his performance, he said: “No, I wouldn’t have thought so,” and admitted the family had known of the news for some time.

He said Kim would still be coming to Wimbledon and did not think that her condition would put any additional stress on him. “I’ll be fine dealing with that,” he added.

It has been Murray’s own condition that has been of greatest concern to his fans over the last fortnight.

The world number one will begin his title defence by playing Bublik, ranked 134. Bublik failed to make it through qualifying, but was given a place in the main draw after a spot opened up.

Also leading the UK charge today is Johanna Konta. The British number one and potential Wimbledon title contender withdrew from her semi-final at the Aegon Championships with a spine injury.

Fans queuing for today’s first day of play will hope the rain stays away. The Met Office forecast for the All England Club was cloudy, but with highs of 22C.
