The PSNI Banbridge Facebook page said that without a “fantastic and composed” ambulance crew at the scene “we could have been dealing with a death”.

Police spoke to witnesses after the attack, but added: “If we didn’t get speaking to you and you witnessed any of this incident, which may have started outside the fire station and ended up in the flats, please contact us on 101.

“This was a horrendous incident which has left a man lying in hospital with serious injuries. If you know anything, please speak up.”
