Anger over illegal rave held close to city interface

- BY CLAIRE WILLIAMSON

CONCERNS were raised on Friday night after an illegal rave took place at an interface in north Belfast.

DUP councillor Brian Kingston said he was “appalled” at the scenes on Hillview Road.

It’s not known exactly where the event was taking place. Mr Kingston said it was in the industrial site near Olympus Gym.

Police were at the scene of the event along with council officers where crowds of young people were gathering.

PUP councillor Julie-Anne Corr-Johnston said she was receiving calls from concerned residents.

She tweeted: “Receiving calls from concerned residents of Lower Oldpark with regards to an ongoing rave at the Hillview Interface that was, earlier today, denied an entertainments licence by Belfast City Council. Liaising with police who have a heavy presence onsite.”

Mr Kingston said: “This is an industrial site and it’s taking place without an entertainment licence and it’s also at a very sensitive interface just off the Oldpark Road.”

He said there were over a dozen PSNI Land Rovers at the scene and that it was “entirely unregulated”.

“I’m told the organisers did apply for an entertainment licence but did so at too short notice and there will be lots of questions on how this event is being run. Residents on lower Oldpark Road say bottles were thrown at their houses last week when the event finished at around 4am. I will be doing my utmost to get these events stopped.”
