NI shoppers lead way for using cash over cards

- BY JOHN MULGREW

CASH is still king for Northern Ireland consumers with almost double the number here choosing it ahead of card payments.

Almost two-thirds of people quizzed here said they preferred using cash when paying for goods and services. That’s significantly higher than the UK average of 35%, according to a survey of 1,000 UK consumers conducted by OnePoll with First Data.

Around 44% of customers in Northern Ireland said they would “go somewhere else” to make a purchase or not make the purchase at all if cash was the only payment option.

However, more than a third of customers said they would be ready to abandon cash if society went completely cashless.

The survey found that 93% of people admitted to carrying emergency cash.

Of those choosing to use contactless card payments, all of those questioned said they did so because it is faster.

Raj Sond, general manager at First Data, said: “Time-pushed, busy consumers are looking for a fast, hassle-free shopping experience.

“Convenience is paramount, and a smooth payment mechanism is vital in being able to offer a tailored, seamless service.

“With multiple shopping options on the high street and online it’s all too easy for potential customers to take their business elsewhere. Successful companies would be wise not to make assumptions about what their customers want.

“Payment is a crucial part of the customer journey and experience and cannot be ignored in the quest for growth and loyalty.”
