Marcon agrees deal to upgrade facilities at castle in Scotland

- BY JOHN MULGREW

AN Antrim fit-out firm has landed a contract for work on a 400-year-old Scottish castle as part of a £5m redevelopment.

Marcon will oversee the “interpretive fit-out works” at the visitor centre and Rural Life Centre at Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock.

“Marcon will put the finishing touches to the redevelopment project which will deliver enhanced facilities for visitors to the park,” it said.

Dean Castle is one of Ayrshire’s best preserved castles and was the stronghold of the Boyds, Lords of Kilmarnock, for over 400 years, with connections to Robert the Bruce.

Marcon said its heritage team will be “responsible for the manufacture and installation of all specialist joinery, setworks, AV hardware and graphics”.

It will work with firm G2 design, which specialises in the interpretive design of visitor centres.

Martin McErlean, heritage contracts manager with Marcon, said: “We are pleased to be playing an integral role in the redevelopment works at Dean Castle in Ayrshire.

“It is very rewarding to know that our work will be enjoyed by thousands of visitors of all ages as they visit the beautiful surrounds of the country park.

“All of the bespoke joinery for the interactive exhibition will be manufactured in our specialist facility and installed on-site by our expert craftsmen.”

He added: “This project certainly adds to our reputation as a leading fit-out provider within the UK heritage sector.”
