LURGAN produced the only real upset in yesterday’s Irish Senior Cup first-round matches when they defeated Trinity College 2-0 at the Co Armagh venue.

First-half goals from Sarah McClure, from a penalty corner in the fourth minute, and a well-taken effort from Lauren Wright on the half-hour were enough to clinch Lurgan a place in the last 16.

“We played really well in the first half but we rode our luck a little in the second when Trinity had two shots hit the post.” said Lurgan striker Joanne Wilson.

Pegasus were yesterday’s only other Ulster winners as, after a slow start, not scoring for 23 minutes, they crushed Leinster Division One side Corinthian 12-0 at Upper Malone helped by a hat-trick from Lucy McKee.

McKee’s younger sister, Katie, was also on target with Rachael McMillan, Alex Speers and Hannah Grieve all scoring two and the other goals coming from Shirley McCay and Michelle Harvey.

Elsewhere, Banbridge lost 5-0 against Old Alex at Havelock Park and Dungannon fell to a 7-1 defeat against Cork Harlequins at the Royal School.

The Munster side had an over- night stay in Ulster after drawing 1-1 with Ards in the EY IHL 24 hours earlier at Londonderry Park.

In the other national league game on Saturday, Pegasus and Railway Union fought out a dull and ultimately scoreless draw at Upper Malone

Ballymoney, meanwhile, stay top of the Ulster Premier League after former Ireland striker Nikki Parke scored twice in a 3-0 win over Portadown while there were wins in the Irish Hockey Trophy for Mossley and Omagh.
