Dougan inspires future generations of Slaughtneil camogs

SHE may be one of the more seasoned campaigners on the Slaughtneil camogie team now, but midfielder Louise Dougan is keenly aware of the legacy she is laying down for future generations.

“The young players who are coming through now are get- ting a taste of what it is like to be successful and hopefully this will be the case with other players of the future,” she said just minutes after the dramatic win over Loughgiel that sealed their successful defence of the Ulster camogie Championship.

Slaughtneil had trailed from the opening minutes when Loughgiel struck for two early Racquel Murphy goals and, behind by three points as the game entered the final stages, Dougan drilled home a goal from a penalty by using the ground to her advantage and Therese Mellon flicked the winner to the net soon after.

“If nothing succeeds like success, then I think that what we have achieved so far — and hopefully there is more to come — will act as a spur for players of the future,” explained a delighted Dougan. “We all take great pride in wearing the jersey and it is always our aim to do ourselves proud no matter at what level we play.”

Slaughtneil now go on to the All-Ireland stage as defending champions, a dreamlike scenario.

“We know we are there to be knocked down and that’s why we will be on our guard,” added Dougan

“But this team is essentially a great bunch of girls. There is great character within the side and a willingness to go the extra mile in the pursuit of success.

“The support we get is tremendous and this is an added spur for us. Obviously an All-Ireland semi-final takes us to a higher level.” Setting an example: Louise Dougan is inspiring youngsters
