Ibrox chiefs should look to Allardyce: MacDonald
FORMER Rangers striker John MacDonald would opt for Sam Allardyce to be the next Ibrox boss.
The Govan club are on the hunt for a new manager after confirming that they have parted company with Portuguese coach Pedro Caixinha after just seven months.
Under-20s boss Graeme Murty will resume caretaker duties for the second time this year.
If MacDonald had his way, former England boss Allardyce would be next in the Ibrox hotseat.
He said: “I would go for someone like big Sam Allardyce; high profile, former England manager, who has done well in England.
“I don’t think any teams would bully any of his teams. And Sam would probably get the fans on board. But it is a difficult question. There are no obvious replacements.
“You hear that many names being bandied around. Everyone has their own likes and preferences, I don’t really care as long as they come in and do well.
“But who is going to do that? We don’t know.”
MacDonald, who played for the Light Blues between 1978 and 1986, continued: “Celtic went big and went for Brendan Rodgers and look what they have done.
“But Rangers don’t have the finances Celtic have got to do that.
“I just hope it gets sorted quickly so they get back on track and get some results.”
Former Rangers and Scotland captain Barry Ferguson, who came through the youth system and had two spells at Ibrox, said: “I just want somebody who knows the club and the expectations.
“I want someone who knows what it’s all about to play for and manage Rangers, and can get that hunger and desire back into the team.
“The next appointment has got to be right.”
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton, a regular critic of Caixinha, was scathing of his spell in charge, describing him as the “most embarrassing manager in the history of Rangers”.
He said on the BT Sport Twitter account: “The class clown, the walking, talking contradiction, he had to go. The Rangers board had absolutely no choice.
“He was probably the most embarrassing manager in the history of Rangers Football Club.”
He added: “He was a loose cannon and a disaster waiting to happen.”
