History-maker Kate is a runway success at Fashionweek

- BY REBECCA BLACK

THERE was a standing ovation at Belfast Fashionweek last night as the first model with Down’s syndrome in the event’s history took to the catwalk.

Kate Grant, a teenager from Cookstown, was beaming from ear to ear as she showcased a flirty little black dress from Debenhams accessorised with a simple silver clutch bag, her blonde hair beautifully preened.

The 19-year-old blew kisses at the cheering crowd who had risen to their feet as soon as she appeared on the catwalk at the event in St Anne’s Cathedral.

She strutted with confidence, striking professional model poses in between huge smiles as she made history.

Kate has previously spoken of how she wants to challenge people’s perceptions of beauty and highlight discrimination faced by those with a disability.

The high street catwalk show followed the high fashion show on Thursday night at the same prestigious venue, and opened with the showing of a collection of lingerie by Victoria Square’s Boux Avenue as well as a Debenhams’ Designers at Debenhams showcase, including some special pieces from Julien McDonald, Henry Holland and John Rocha. It also included some affordable fashion by George.

The stylish events continue with Sushi Saturday today at Zen, Style Sunday tomorrow, and a new ‘F Words’ brunch on the rooftop of the city’s Bullitt Hotel.
