Cavanagh and Vernon share provincial glory goal

- BY JOHN CAMPBELL

TWO of Ulster’s leading players, who just happen to be brothersin-law, will chart different courses in the Ulster club championship series over the course of the next 24 hours.

While the much-decorated Sean Cavanagh will line out for Moy in the provincial intermediate football championship quarter-final against Monaghan champions Carrickmacross tomorrow at Healy Park, Omagh (2.30pm), Charlie Vernon will be an important component within the Armagh Harps side that will confront Derrygonnelly tonight at Brewster Park, Enniskillen (7.00pm) in a senior club quarter-final.

The backdrop to both games is similar with Moy having landed the Tyrone intermediate title for the first time in 35 years while Harps have waited for 26 years to be crowned orchard county senior champions.

Vernon along with Patrick Morrison, Declan McKenna, Conor White, Joe McElroy and Ultan Lennon will help to form the experienced core of a Harps side that has really blossomed this year.

They will confront a Derrygonnelly outfit still seeking a first win in the Ulster club series in what is their third successive year in the competition.

The Fermanagh side will look to the Jones brothers Ryan, Garvan and Conal along with two other members of that particular clan Leigh and Mickey and Paul Ward, Kevin Cassidy and Dermot Feely to spark their challenge.

Sean Cavanagh and his brother Colm form the bedrock of the Moy team and they will face a tough task against a Carrickmacross side that has achieved a high level of consistency lately.

“The fact that the club has had to wait 35 years to win the Tyrone intermediate title has given us added desire to perform well on the Ulster stage,” states Sean Cavanagh.

“We are excited about playing at Healy Park where there should be a tremendous atmosphere.” Up for the challenge: Sean Cavanagh is eager to impress
