I’ll hold onto the reins for as long as it takes to find a suitable successor: Murty
GRAEME Murty has vowed to hold down the fort for as long as it takes Rangers to find the right man to replace Pedro Caixinha.
The Light Blues’ Under-20s boss has again been put in charge of first-team matters after the Portuguese’s sacking.
He is back in the spotlight eight months after he was first handed caretaker duties following Mark Warburton’s departure.
On that occasion, Murty oversaw six games — even masterminding a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park.
Now he will be expected to hold things together again as Dave King’s board start the search for someone capable of picking up the pieces following their failed Caixinha experiment.
Murty admits he has not been given a timeline for that process but is determined to provide the troubled Ibrox squad with some stability in the meantime.
“I’ll sit in the seat for as long as the club sees fit,” said the ex-Scotland and Reading defender. “(Managing director) Stewart Robertson asked me to step up. I thanked him for the opportunity and for the trust. I’m honoured again to be asked to do this.
“But now I’m here I’ve got to deal with the reality and I’ll give it as good as I can.
“I saw Pedro yesterday and he wished me good luck. I reciprocated because with me he was very open, honest and dignified.
“Now the club should be taking their time to make sure they get this appointment right. I’ll go on until otherwise informed.”
Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has already emerged as the early favourite but Murty shrugged off suggestions he might throw his hat into the ring.
For now, his main priority is to cajole a fragile and injury-hit squad into shape before today’s Hearts trip.
His first act was to call Kenny Miller back in from the cold.
