Traffic disruption after lorry smashes into Bangor bridge
A BRIDGE near Bangor was badly damaged yesterday evening after a lorry driver smashed into the structure before fleeing the scene.
The crash was reported just after 6pm and left part of the Ballysallagh Road between Bangor and Dundonald covered in debris.
Police said a witness had provided details of the vehicle that drove away leaving “really substantial damage”.
The PSNI said on Facebook: “We will be calling, I assure you all.”
The Ballysallagh Road is expected to remain closed in both directions this morning.
In March last year, another lorry with a skip became wedged under the bridge, which has a 3.4m height limit. DUP MLA Gordon Dunne said he was “frustrated” the structure had been hit yet again.
“This closure brings about real disruption for thousands of motorists every day who rely on this route for their daily commute to and from work,” he added.
“The road closure also brings real disruption to a number of local businesses in close proximity to the bridge, including the Clandeboye Lodge Hotel and Blackwood Golf Club. This adds to the already significant volume of daily traffic on the A2 dual carriageway.”
Mr Dunne said he had lobbied Transport NI to implement a height warning system on the road.
Despite the bridge being hit multiple times in recent years, the MLA said Transport NI told him the existing signs were adequate.
