Obama’s daughter dating UK student who worked in NI

- BY ALLAN PRESTON

THE daughter of former US President Barack Obama is reportedly dating a former British public schoolboy who spent a summer working in Northern Ireland as an intern.

Malia Obama (19) is in her first year of Harvard University, following in the footsteps of her famous parents, who both graduated from Harvard Law School.

Pictures showed her kissing English-born student Rory Farquharson (19) at a football game on Saturday.

The former head boy at England’s prestigious Rugby School spent a summer here as an intern with the Centre for Democracy and Peace Building.

Mr Farquharson was reportedly “very popular” in school and considered “quite a catch.”

He represented the institution in rugby and golf and was part of Malia Obama with her father Barack in 2014 when he was US President

its blue Bunsen chemistry club.

Mr Farquharson’s also played an extra in a promotional video for the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony in 2015, which featured Prince Harry.

When he arrived in the United States last autumn, the new student posted a picture of himself on social media with the caption: “So it begins”.

Last year, Mr Obama acknowledged that his daughters, Malia and Sasha, had started dating, but he also stressed that he was “pretty relaxed about it for two reasons”.

“One is (their mother) Michelle,” he explained.

“She’s such a great example in how she carries herself, her self-esteem, not depending on boys to validate how you look or, you know, not letting yourself be judged by anything other than your character and intelligence. And hopefully I’ve been a good example in terms of how I’ve shown respect to my wife.

“I don’t worry about it because they’re really solid, smart girls — young ladies now.

“They’ve had Secret Service (around them), so there’s only so much these guys can do. These poor young men come by my house and they have no idea.”

When the Obamas’ eldest daughter moved into her new surroundings at Harvard earlier this year, it caused quite the commotion among her fellow students.

After finishing school in 2016, Malia interned at the production company of the now disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in New York.

Her year out also saw her work as a production assistant in Los Angeles on Halle Berry’s short-lived TV show Extant.

While she praised her strong work ethic, Ms Berry said the cast and crew were too star- struck to treat Malia like an ordinary assistant.

“She was down to do whatever a PA is asked to do, and I had wild respect for her for that,” the actress added.

“Everybody couldn’t really see her as a PA, although she tried and tried to be one.

“We just couldn’t really see her as one but, to her credit, she tried very hard to be one.

“She was fantastic, she was amazing.

“She is such a smart, beautiful, young woman.

“Look at who her mother and her father are.”
