Gurney hits bullseye by sponsoring school’s teams

NORTHERN Ireland darts star Daryl Gurney has made an incredibly generous donation to his former school by paying for new sports kits for four of their teams.

The World No.4 burst on to the scene this year with some stunning performanc­es, including winning his first ever major PDC title, the World Grand Prix, in Dublin in October.

And the Londonderr­y-born thrower has made the gesture of paying for new kit for Lisneal College’s hockey and three football teams.

While Gurney, nicknamed ‘Superchin’, didn’t attend Lisneal itself, he did go to Faughan Valley High School, part of the merger to create Lisneal in 2004.

And when the new school put out an appeal for sponsorshi­p of their sporting sides, Gurney was more than happy to assist.

“We had an appeal running on the school’s very popular Facebook page and from that there was an exchange of messages on Twitter with Daryl’s sister Hayley,” said Lisneal principal Michael Allen.

“The kids are absolutely over the moon that Daryl has agreed to sponsor the school teams.”

The head also revealed Gurney’s impressive form has sparked interest, with some pupils showing quite a knack for darts.

“We’ve now around 25 pupils throwing every lunchtime, and there’s one or two who are pretty good,” he added.

“We were searching for a role model and now we have one.”
