Donovan praise for coach Lee after his sixth Stadium win

- BY BERNARD O’NEILL

UNDEFEATED Eric Donovan racked up his sixth win at Dublin’s National Stadium on Saturday night and had an even busier Sunday morning — putting up his Christmas decorations.

The Kildare southpaw landed a shutout 80-72 decision after dominating Juan Gonzalez.

The bout wasn’t for Donovan’s Celtic title after the Spaniard feather failed to make weight.

Donovan, who had ex-WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee working his corner, insists the weight issues didn’t take the edge off the eight-rounder.

“I was still 100% focused on putting on a good display. I had no intentions of relinquishing the title either way, whether he was eligible for it or not,” he said.

“It was still a very important fight. We’ve made a couple offers to featherweights in the country to box me for the Irish title but they’ve all turned it down.

“So, I can’t box nobody to win the title. My plan is to get another two fights early next year and then I can be officially ranked by the European body.

“It was his (Andy Lee) pro debut as a coach as well. He was fully committed and fully involved in the training camp and has highlighted a lot or me.

“I enjoyed last night and I’m enjoying the day off. I’ll put up the Christmas decorations today with my girlfriend and my two sons. Merry Christmas.”

Meanwhile, Jay Byrne stopped Ger Whitehouse to claim the Celtic welter belt.
