US family of four killed in collision on way to funeral

- BY SIOBHAN FENTON

INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing into a road crash in Co Wexford in which four people were killed while on their way to a funeral.

The victims, a family from the US, have been named locally as Lily Ryan-Alexander and her husband Doug Alexander, along with their sons Doug Jnr and Steve.

The family were travelling to the funeral of a relative when the tragedy occurred.

Garda say a car and a lorry collided at around 6.30pm on Monday evening near Lacken, New Ross, on the N25.

The four family members died at the scene.

It is thought they had travelled from Illinois to attend the funeral of Mrs Ryan-Alexander’s sister Winnie Keevey in Wexford and were driving to her wake when the collision happened.

Local priest Fr Sean Devereux told RTE: “The community is absolutely numbed by the tragedy and all that has unfolded.

“All we can really do, as a faith community, is offer support and to be with those who are bereaved and be with the Keevey family, who have had this tragedy impacted upon them as they were grieving the passing of their mother.”

He added: “It’s just unimaginable, really, to think.”

The road where the incident occurred remained closed yesterday while Garda officers continued to examine the scene.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
