Canavan can inspire Errigal Ciaran
IT’S all weather dependent naturally, but this weekend’s St Paul’s Tournament features three heavyweight tussles.
First up is the meeting of Errigal Ciaran of Tyrone and Derry’s Ballinascreen on Saturday at 1.30pm at St Paul’s.
Errigal are one of only four Tyrone clubs to have won this tournament, having last taken the title in 2005 and featured in the 2007 final.
They have Stephen Quinn as their manager for this season and can call upon the talents of Darragh Canavan, son of Peter.
That game is followed later the same day when Ramor United of Virginia, Cavan, face county neighbours Enniskillen Gaels of Fermanagh. That game is hosted at the Woodlands at 5.45pm.
The Fermanagh minor final was ran off in July, so they have had a long wait to get going, but the former winners of this tournament have kept busy, meeting Monaghan champions Killaney and St Michael’s College MacRory team in their preparations.
On Sunday, Clann Eireann of Lurgan, Armagh, are coming in cold against St Eunan’s of Donegal, who accounted for a strong Burren team in the preliminary round last weekend.
This group of Clann Eireann players are a side that won the Paul McGirr (under-16) tournament two years ago, so they must be taken as one of the favourites to win the competition outright.
But Burren were the defending champions at this level, so St Eunan’s certainly are coming in with some wind at their backs.
Meanwhile, Errigal Ciaran and Clann Eireann are also out in action this weekend in the Ulster ladies’ minor championship, that game in Clones on Sunday at 1pm, though the weather may put paid to that.
