Hughton says lessons have to be learned from heavy Pool loss

- BY ROBERT JONES

BRIGHTON manager Chris Hughton is confident his side can learn from their 5-1 thrashing by Liverpool as they look to bounce back at Huddersfield.

The Seagulls were outclassed by the Reds in front of their own fans last weekend — a second defeat in the last three games having also lost 1-0 at Manchester United.

Hughton, however, is determined to find some positives from the heavy reverse and get his team back on track with a positive result against Huddersfield, who were also promoted last season.

“It’s about reacting to difficult days, because nobody likes to lose. The Liverpool result was something we haven’t been involved in too much so far this season,” Hughton said.

“But one thing it does do is reiterate to the players that if you make mistakes, teams like that will really capitalise on them.

“On the day, Liverpool had six shots on target and scored five goals, and that demonstrates how clinical the top teams can be — but we’ll learn from that without a doubt and the players have trained really well this week.”

Hughton is hoping his team have “evolved to be better” than when the two sides met at the John Smith’s Stadium in the Sky Bet Championship last season, which saw Brighton well beaten 3-1, although it did not ultimately derail their promotion push.

Brighton have so far picked up two wins and a draw on their travels back in the top flight after an absence of some 34 years, which is a record Hughton hopes will continue to improve.

“One area I have been delighted with so far this season is our away performances,” he added.
