Greene takes a swipe at Dunn after setting up Higgins battle

- BY RICHARD DORE

NORTHERN Ireland cueman Gerard Greene put in one of his best performances of the season at the Dafabet Scottish Open, progressing into the third round of the Glasgow tournament.

The experienced potter beat England’s Mike Dunn, somewhat of a bogey player for Greene, 4-3 in a nervy encounter.

The pair traded the match frame by frame until a break of 50 helped Greene claim the decider, the Ulsterman prevailing despite losing his concentration.

“It was a good clearance to win it, it was an even first six frames then I’ve had a good break in the last,” said Greene. “It was not a bad game, he missed a few and I missed a few but not a lot. Mike just kind of goes for everything and just gives away murder so I’m more than happy.

“There was one frame where I missed the ball, he played a safety and left a red and he sort of mumbled to himself — my concentration was gone then because I’m thinking, ‘I’m not going for that one because if I miss it I lose the game’.

“I ended up playing another one, but if he hadn’t said anything I would’ve gone for the red. Players shouldn’t say a word, it drives me mad.

“We haven’t played for a while but he’s beat me the last few times —he’s a bit of a bogey player. I’m happy with the win.”

Greene faces a tough task in round three, where he’ll take on World No.5 John Higgins.

Fellow countryman Joe Swail won’t be joining Greene in round three — the 48-year-old was always up against it facing Ricky Walden and succumbed 4-2. • WATCH the Scottish Open LIVE on Eurosport, Eurosport Player and Quest with Andy Goldstein and analysis from Jimmy White and Neal Foulds.
