McAleer and Rushe to build £30m Glasgow four-star hotel for Dalata

CO TYRONE developer McAleer and Rushe is set to build a new four-star hotel in Glasgow in a £30m project.

The firm, which is based in Cookstown, has signed up to an agreement with its long-term collaborat­or, Irish hotel group Dalata.

Staff from McAleer and Rushe will be building the 250-bed hotel on Renfrew Street in the city centre.

Meanwhile, Dalata confirmed the Maldron Hotel off Bedford Street in Belfast will be opening in the middle of March next year.

It will be the company’s fourth in the province, among 39 hotels across the UK and Ireland.

McAleer and Rushe director Stephen Surphlis said the deal signalled improved confidence.

“The announceme­nt of our latest lease deal with Dalata represents the growing confidence in key regional UK cities for hotel operators, particular­ly in Scotland,” he added.

The firm already operates the Clayton Hotel in Belfast’s Ormeau Avenue, as well as Maldron hotels in Londonderr­y and at Belfast Internatio­nal Airport.

The company confirmed the timing of its Belfast opening in a year-end trading update to the Irish Stock Exchange yesterday.

Dermot Crowley, deputy chief executive of business developmen­t and finance at McAleer and Rushe, said: “2017 has been another very successful year for Dalata in terms of trading at our existing hotels, the acquisitio­n of new hotels and building up a developmen­t pipeline in the UK.

“Our hotel portfolio continues to perform very strongly across all of our regions.

“We are very happy to have secured the effective freehold interests of additional rooms at both Clayton Hotel Cardiff Lane and Clayton Hotel Liffey Valley.

“We are also delighted to have entered into an agreement to lease a newly constructe­d Maldron hotel in Glasgow.

“We have a very strong relationsh­ip with McAleer & Rushe, who are currently building our new hotels in Belfast, Newcastle and Charlemont, Dublin.

“Today’s announceme­nt brings the number of UK hotels in our developmen­t pipeline to five with a total of circa 1,350 rooms.

“Given the pipeline of hotels due to open in the next year and the continued strength of trading in our three regions, we look forward to 2018 with confidence.”
