Mother of racing legend McCoy to be laid to rest

- BY ADRIAN RUTHERFORD

THE funeral of the mother of racing legend AP McCoy will take place tomorrow.

Claire McCoy passed away peacefully in hospital on Boxing Day.

Her 20-time Champion Jockey son announced her passing on Twitter, paying tribute to his “beautiful” mum.

A death notice said her passing was “deeply regretted” by her sorrowing husband, sons, daughters and wider family circle.

Requiem Mass will take place at noon tomorrow in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Moneyglass, Co Antrim, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Announcing her passing on Tuesday, McCoy posted a family picture on Twitter.

He wrote: “My beautiful mother Claire passed away peacefully this evening with all her family around.

“The most incredible wife to my Dad and mother to myself, Annemarie, Roisin, Jane, Colm and Kelly.”

While proud of her son’s sporting achievements, McCoy’s mother often worried for his safety as he faced the dangers of the race track.

People from across the sporting world sent messages of support and condolences.

The Jockey Club said: “Deepest condolences from us and all of our colleagues to you and your family. Our thoughts are with you all.”

Former Ireland rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll tweeted: “So sorry to hear that AP. May she RIP.”

And golfer Justin Rose said: “Thinking of you @AP_McCoy and all the family at this time.”
