Tipton cites Taylor’s example as Town’s defence creaks yet again

WARRENPOINT Town manager Matthew Tipton told his defenders to take a leaf out of Johnny Taylor’s book after Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Ards.

Tipton (right) was enraged that his side scored three goals at home but still failed to come away with full points after Town’s defensive failings once more proved their undoing.

Having gone in front through Darren Murray with just 90 seconds on the clock, the hosts allowed Ards to take the lead before half-time; Michael McLellan and Scott Davidson doing the damage.

Although Conor McMenamin made it 2-2, the ‘Point were cut open 11 minutes from time as sub Craig McMullen held off Danny Wallace before squeezing in what looked to be the winner.

However, Liam McKenna earned the south Down side a share of the spoils two minutes into stoppage time as his shot somehow squirmed past Ards keeper Sam Johnston.

Tipton was fuming that his side are seemingly unable to do what he sees as the basics of defending and used Ards centre-back Taylor as an example of how it should be done.

“For the first goal, you have to head it, not let the ball hit you on the head. You have to head it and head it high and wide and away,” Tipton barked.

“I told them to go and watch Johnny Taylor’s performance for Ards. They conceded three as well but he’s given a performance there that shows why he’s one of the best in the business and has been an Irish League defender for 10 years.

“He puts himself between the ball and the man. He knows where the goal is and he puts his foot through it.”
