Caldwell backing Larne to see off Duns threat and keep Cup bid alive

CIARAN Caldwell admits he’s gutted to miss Larne’s big Tennent’s Irish Cup scrap with Dundela today.

The former Cliftonville ace

(below) is suspended after being sent off against Portadown this week, but he still believes the Championship side have enough firepower to reach the quarter-finals.

The Duns are sitting top of the Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League after recording eight wins in their opening 13 league matches.

“I was sent off against Portadown in a 50-50 challenge with Andy Kilmartin and it’s very disappointing to miss this big cup game,” said Caldwell.

“Dundela are a good side with some good players like Jay Magee and David McMaster, who have Irish League experience, but when you look at the other sides in the draw it was a favourable one for us.

“All the boys are looking forward to it and while it’s unfortunate I will have to sit it out, I’m confident the team is strong enough to make the next round.

“The club is very professional and of course I know the manager Tiernan and coach Seamus very well after they brought me to Glentoran.

“They are building a good squad and while it was disappointing to miss out on a place in the top six the club will really target that next season.

“The club wants to play football the right way and strengthen with that aim in mind.”
