A NEW hairdo for a nine-yearold Jordanstown girl has raised £2,000 for charity — with the added bonus that people can now tell her apart from her twin.
Grace Andrews generously donated 10 inches of her own locks to the Little Princess Trust, which uses real hair to make wigs for children who have lost theirs to chemotherapy.
Grace — whose twin Abbie was happy for her sister to take the plunge — was inspired to take on the challenge six months ago after seeing others taking part online.
In January the Duchess of Cambridge also donated seven inches of her own locks to the organisation.
After months of waiting, the Mossley Primary School pupil finally had her appointment yesterday at the Peter Mark salon in the Abbey Centre. “At the time I had a favourite YouTube channel and I saw a girl who was holding her hair up,” Grace said.
“I thought she just had a normal haircut but I watched the whole video and found out about it all. So for months I’ve just been asking my mum: ‘When can I get it done for charity?’ So she finally booked the appointment.”
Grace added: “I love the new look now.”
Proud parents Carolynn and Robbie said they were knocked out by Grace’s kind gesture.
“When she first told me about it her hair was nearly down to her waist, so I told her to think about it in case it was a phase she was
going through,” said Carolynn.
“Every month she kept asking, so we started a JustGiving page, which has raised nearly £2,000 now.
“It’s a fabulous charity and I’m just so proud of Grace for making the decision to do this. It’s not every girl that can do it, and me and her dad are just so proud of her.”
And it means people can now tell the identical girls apart.
Mum added: “Abbie is so proud of her sister. She keeps giving her hugs and kisses. There’s some talk of her doing it too — but she was happy to let Grace take the first step.”
The Little Princess Trust will use Grace’s donation to make real hair wigs crafted by specialists
and experienced stylists and give them free of charge to children across the UK and Ireland.
Regarding last month’s donation from the Duchess, charity manager Monica Glass said: “We are so very grateful to every single person who kindly supports the charity in this way. Receiving a free, real hair wig has a very positive impact on a child
or young adult at such a difficult time. We hope that this donation will encourage others to consider supporting the charity in the same way.”
