Appeal for witnesses to hit-and-run incident just yards from PSNI station
POLICE are seeking witnesses to a hit-and-run incident close to a PSNI station that left a woman badly injured.
The 60-year-old pedestrian sustained a cracked vertabrae, leg injuries and severe bruising in the incident at Quarry Lane in Dungannon.
Police are trying to identify a man driving a red car who stopped to ask if the woman was okay, but then left the scene.
It occurred at around 6pm last Thursday, February 8, but details were only released yesterday.
The incident came nine days after Lithuanian national Edmundas Cizauskas (46) died following another hit-and-run in the town.
The PSNI issued an appeal in an attempt to track down the man in the red car so he can assist with its enquiries into the latest incident.
Posting on the PSNI Dungannon and South Tyrone Facebook page yesterday, officers said that the elderly woman had been crossing at the top of Quarry Lane towards the South Tyrone Hospital when a vehicle “collided with her in the middle of the road”.
Dungannon UUP councillor Walter Cuddy said: “The police station has cameras, and this would have happened right outside it, so you would think there might be CCTV to show something.
“I’m surprised they have had to put out an appeal.
“This must have been pretty horrendous for the elderly lady. The person who helped must have thought she was okay and moved on, but he needs to get back in touch with the police.
“I would appeal to him to make contact with the PSNI.”
Sinn Fein councillor Dominic Molloy said he was “surprised the PSNI have made an appeal”.
He added: “There are CCTV cameras at the police station, but they may not have been pointing in that direction. My thoughts are with this lady and her family.
“This follows the fatal RTC in the town last month. I would urge anyone with information to come forward.”
DUP councillor Clement Cuthbertson wished the injured pedestrian a speedy recovery.
He said: “This latest incident at Quarry Lane is very concerning and follows on from the recent hit-and-run tragedy on the Killyman Road.
“I would urge anyone with information on this latest incident to come forward to the police immediately.
“Quarry Lane and the hospital road roundabout are extremely busy junctions and I have no doubt someone will have witnessed this incident.
“As Dungannon PSNI station is also nearby on Quarry Lane, CCTV cameras will hopefully be of help.”
PSNI Chief Inspector Roy Robinson said: “The CCTV cameras at Dungannon PSNI station are in full working order and are operational 24/7.”
