Christians will always protect the unborn

-

I AM accused by David Fullerton (Write Back, February 6) of being judgemental of women seeking abortion when faced with a crisis pregnancy. This is not so, but his letter highlights our contrasting world views.

Atheism sees people as just another animal species and a foetus as an expendable non-person, its value dependent on the mother’s attitude. However, not all atheists are pro-abortion.

Christianity sees human life as present throughout pregnancy, thus Christians will seek to protect the unborn at all stages.

Proverbs 24: “Rescue those who are being led away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say ‘we did not know this’, does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it? And will he not requite man according to his work?” God judges, I do not.

Existing law in Northern Ireland is not an absolute ban on abortion. It has been permitted in cases where the mother’s mental health was at risk.

Only a small proportion of those who seek abortion in England could be doing so for crisis reasons. There, 98% of abortions in 2016 were for social reasons.

Christians have sometimes backed oppressive laws, but this is different, because two human lives are involved.

There are other solutions, such as adoption, and non-judgemental support from pro-life groups.
