Newcomers impress but ‘old girl’ lands £600 Drumbo prize

- BY ROBERT FENTON

ALL eyes were on the newcomers in the Dylan Thomas & DTSC Unraced Open worth £600 for two runs at Drumbo Park.

There were two non-runners in the initial heat due to kennel sickness but it still saw an impressive first run from the black pup Blame The Game who clocked a brilliant 17.81 for Coalisland owner Michael Corr.

A Sept 2016 black son of Laughil Blake, he flew out of trap three, hit the turn in 6.52 and ran on strongly in beating Verrazano four lengths with Longrange Nuter a further two lengths back in third.

Shale Ma Nonu put in another nice display, although not in such a fast time as the previous winner. Owned by Lurgan’s John Bynre, Shale and another Michael Corr pup, Meenagh Matic, contested the run-up but Nonu took control at the bend (6.65) and ran on to beat Paradise Sofa five lengths in 18.12, the latter coming through to deny Matic for second by a short head.

Veteran Abrakebabra Bee showed she still has plenty of sting when it comes to winning prizes, coming in initially as a reserve and landing the £600 Superior Product @Stud & DTSC Bitch 525 final for the Belfast Cheap-As-Chips-Racing Syndicate.

The black bitch, superbly handled by John Berry, has a litter of pups 10 months old and is 11 short of a century of races. The August ’13 ‘old girl’ has lost none of her enthusiasm, holding off Deanmill Annie by half-a-length.
