Kate bucks the trend for black at this year’s Baftas

- BY DAVID YOUNG

KATE Middleton side-stepped the fashion police when she attended last night’s glitzy Bafta bash in a green dress, rather than wearing black in solidarity with the Time’s Up campaign, which had called for an all-black dress code at the awards.

The Duchess, who is pregnant with her third child, looked radiant as she moved through the throng of black-clad stars.

Long-established protocol states that members of the royal family only wear black when in mourning.

At the glittering event in the Royal Albert Hall, the award for Best Film went to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, starring US actress Frances McDormand. She also won the Best Actress award,

while co-star Sam Rockwell took the Best Supporting Actor honour.

Gary Oldman won Best Actor for his performance in The Darkest Hour, in which he played wartime

Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, while Guillermo del Toro took the Best Director award for his film The Shape Of Water. Allison Janney was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in I, Tonya, which tells the story of the life of US figure skater Tonya Hardin. Janney played the skater’s mother. But there was disappointment

for Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who had been hotly tipped for an award recognising her performance in Lady Bird, the story of an outspoken teen in a loving but turbulent relationship with her mother.

Before the gala event kicked off, a group of feminists wearing Time’s Up Theresa T-shirts stormed the red carpet to protest about sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.
