We can pull off great escape: O’Kane

- BY JOHN CAMPBELL

FOUR decades as a player, mentor and manager with Antrim have taught Gary O’Kane all there is to know about the vagaries of hurling.

Yet tomorrow he is hoping to see what could prove to be a rehabilitation process that may have beneficial long-term effects for the Saffrons — something that might not have been thought possible just over a week ago.

It was the team’s unexpected win over Offaly that has giv- en a fresh complexion to their Division 1B relegation play-off against Laois, to whom they have already lost, at Dunloy where O’Kane believes the team can perhaps scale a fresh peak.

One of the four-strong management team, O’Kane is convinced Antrim can stay up.

“If we can play to our full potential we can make it,” he said.

Down travel to Kingspan Breffni tomorrow where they will face Mayo in the Division 2B final. The sides met last weekend when Down won by 3-19 to 0-14.

Meanwhile, fortune is certainly not smiling on the Derry camogie team right now.

Not only have their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of Division 2 Group 2 of the Littlewoods Ireland National League all but disappeared but scoring ace Karen Kielt has suffered a cruciate ligament injury and will be absent for today’s trip to Tipperary.

Laois will seek to claim another Ulster scalp when they meet Armagh tomorrow.

In Division Four of the Lidl Ladies’ Football National League Fermanagh host pointless Kilkenny at Donagh tomorrow while Antrim confront Derry at Ardoyne. Both are at 2.00pm.
