Bill on legalising same-sex marriage in NI to go before Commons

-

Michael Davis: The big question is, how will the DUP react to this?

Aaron Campbell: With some form of ‘anger’ or ‘fury’.

Alun Webb: With outrage. Somewhat predictably.

Winny Miller: We don’t get to vote on it?

Jake O Donnghaile: Why, have you a problem with it? Would two men getting married affect your life?

Winny Miller: Democracy.

Kat Atkinson: Equality isn’t a democratic issue, it’s a right.

Winny Miller: One man, one vote, but not in this case. If they impose this on people, what else will they do?

Brian Redpath: Winny Miller, did we get to vote on your right to marry? No. And the last few times this Bill was brought to the Assembly, the majority of MLAs voted in favour of it, but it was stopped from becoming law by the Undemocratic Unionist Party using a petition of concern to veto it.

Walter Sloan: Democracy would appear to be dying a slow, agonising death in Northern Ireland. Just look at the state of our so-called ‘politics’. Sad.

Winny Miller: Brian, are they afraid of the people?

Lyndsay Michael: Winny, we don’t vote on legislation, we elect MLAs to do that on our behalf. Our MLAs did vote and the vote passed, then the DUP blocked it with a petition of concern. What’s that you were saying about democracy?

David Mason: They’re not imposing anything on you. You don’t have to get gay married if you don’t want to.

Liam Norris: Winny Miller, if you’re opposed to same-sex marriage, then don’t have one.

Gee Rock: The UK constitution makes parliament sovereign. You vote for MPs, MPs enact laws. Ladies and gentlemen , democracy.

Kurtis Alexander Johnston: It will pass, but when it comes to putting the legislation in place, I have a sickening feeling we will be told it’s better that the devolved institutions deal with it.
