Young gets chance to impress for Ireland as Murtagh’s replacement

- BY IAN CALLENDER

CRAIG Young has been called into the Ireland squad for next weekend’s game against Somerset as a replacement for Tim Murtagh, who has been recalled by Middlesex for their clash against Durham MCCU,

If Young plays it will be the Bready pace bowler’s first game since the one-day international Tri-series clash against New Zealand last May. His last first-class game was the Intercontinental Cup match against Hong Kong at Stormont in August 2016.

Meanwhile, there are only four NCU players — and none from the North West — in the Ireland Wolves squad who will play two Twenty20 games and two 50-over games next month in the west of England.

Jack Tector, who is set to make his senior debut against Somerset, leads the 14-man Wolves squad in games against Bath CC and Gloucestershire II on April 14-17.

Peter Chase is the only other player included in both squads while Jacob Mulder is one of six players with senior experience. The other NCU players included are Shane Getkate, James McCollum and Nathan Smith.

The four players getting first Wolves call-ups are Ireland Under-19 captain Harry Tector, Neil Rock, the Rush middle-order batsman who enjoyed a successful U19 World Cup in New Zealand, Stephen Doheny and Fionn Hand, who is on Somerset’s books and could face his senior counterparts at Taunton. WOLVES SQUAD: J Tector (capt), P Chase, D Delany, S Doheny, S Getkate, F Hand, T Kane, J McCollum, J Mulder, N Rock, N Smith, H Tector, S Terry, L Tucker.
