Chief Constable’s tribute following death of ‘inspirational’ PSNI officer
Constable George Hamilton has paid tribute to a former senior PSNI officer who has died following an illness.
Alasdair Robinson served for more than three decades in the RUC and then the PSNI, reaching the rank of Chief Superintendent.
He passed away on Saturday following a long illness.
In a death notice, his family paid tribute to his dignity, courage and strength in the final stage of his life.
They added: “He inspired everyone who knew him”.
Mr Hamilton said his former colleague will be sadly missed.
“I want to pay my deepest sympathies to Alasdair’s wife Gillian and his children at this difficult time,” he said.
“A former Chief Superintendent, Alasdair served as a police officer in all six counties in Northern Ireland for more than 33 years.”
The PSNI chief said Chief Supt Robinson took every opportunity to work to improve confidence in policing.
“A dedicated police officer, Alasdair held many senior operational command posts often in very challenging circumstances,” Mr Hamilton said.
“He used every opportunity to develop partnerships and relationships always with the aim of improving service and, ultimately, the confidence in policing of those communities he has served.
“In 2016, Alasdair was awardCHIEF ed the MBE for Services to Policing and the Community.
“He was also an ardent supporter of many charities.
“He will be sadly missed by all his friends and colleagues within the Police Service.”
A service of thanksgiving will take place today at Greenisland Presbyterian Church.
Chief Supt Robinson held a number of senior posts, including commanding E District which includes Banbridge, Craigavon, Armagh and Newry and Mourne, as well as a lead role on professional standards and discipline.
He is survived by his wife Gillian, daughter Rebecca, son Jamie and stepdaughter Erin, as well as his mother Jean, brother David and nephews Tristan and Brandon.
