Carter remembered as ‘Island triumph

- BY GRAHAM LUNEY

GREENISLAND led the tributes to Carter Carson as they lifted the Barcelona Cup last weekend.

Carter (9), from Newtownabbey, died after being struck by a car near the Gran Sur shopping centre in Tenerife last month.

And as Greenisland U13s won the prestigious trophy on Sunday, the final began with a minute’s silence for the County Antrim boy.

They saw off competition from fellow Northern Ireland side Dungannon United Youth in the final with a narrow 2-1 victory.

But the two sides had beaten international competition to get that far.

Greenisland, managed by Niall McGovern and coached by Cliftonville’s Stephen Small, notably beat Celtic Boys from Glasgow 3-1 in the semi-final, while Dungannon ousted Brazilians EC Vila Nova 2-1 in their lastfour tie.

Both teams had won all three of their group games.

Greenisland star Jaydyn Withers ended the tournament as top scorer in the Under-13 age group with six goals in five games.

And he wasn’t the only individual to pick up an accolade as George Bunting won best goalkeeper, having conceded only three goals in five matches.

It wasn’t all bad news for Dungannon United Youth as their U12s won their age group to make it an NI double.
