Drugs warning follows man’s death in Co Tyrone
SERIOUS concerns have been expressed following the suspected drugs-related death of a Co Tyrone man.
The 34-year-old, understood to be from Cookstown, died after becoming ill at a property on Northland Road in Moneymore on Sunday night.
A number of other people are believed to have sought medical treatment after taking unknown substances, and a 26-year-old man was taken to hospital, where his condition is described as serious.
Mid-Ulster MLA Keith Buchanan offered his condolences to the man’s family following the tragic death. “The death of anyone is a tragedy and my sympathies are with the family of the man who has passed away,” he said. “It is very concerning that a number of people in the area have sought medical attention after taking drugs.”
The DUP representative said the incident serves as a solemn reminder that drugs kill.
“This incident highlights that no one can ever be certain what is in a drug they may take,” he said. “I hope that those who have received treatment will make a full recovery.”
Mr Buchanan also urged people to assist the police in their efforts to keep the streets safer and free from deadly substances.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Foster said that while the investigation is at an early stage and a post-mortem has yet to be carried out, “a possible link to drug or substance abuse is a strong line of enquiry”.
“We also believe that a number of other people may have sought medical attention on Sunday night after becoming unwell following the consumption of drugs,” he said.
DCI Foster strongly advised people not to take illegal drugs or prescription medication which has not been prescribed for them. He also warned against mixing either with alcohol.
“The consequences of ignoring this advice can be life threatening,” he said. “If you have taken drugs or other substances and are feeling unwell, please seek medical attention immediately.”
Police have appealed for anyone who was at the property on Sunday or has any information to contact officers on 101.
