- BY JULIE HAZELTON

THE country came to town for Lurgan and District Horse and Cattle Show Society’s 106th agricultural show.

As temperatures soared, thousands of exhibitors and spectators descended on the town’s idyllic park on Saturday for one of the first provincial shows of the annual farming calendar.

Show secretary Michele Doran hailed the day as a great success.

“We had one heavy shower in the early afternoon, but thankfully the weather was mainly warm and sunny which attracted crowds from all over the country,” she said.

Visitors were treated to an array of activities including amusements, live music, rural crafts, a pet show, vintage vehicles, and a variety of trade exhibits.

The Cochrane family from Portadown — Nigel, Sandra and twins Molly and Matthew — had a memorable day at the show, winning the interbreed beef championship and the overall plaudits for the champion of champions in the cattle section. Their winning entry was crossbred Limousin heifer ‘Nanny McPhee’.

Winning the reserve overall cattle championship was the Holstein and interbreed dairy champion Glasson Meridian Balise B VG89 from Philip and Si- mon Haffey’s 150-cow dairy herd at Portadown.

Top honours in the sheep section went to a Beltex shearling ewe from David Brown’s flock at Bessbrook.

In the poultry section, the supreme championship went to a Buff Orpington Rooster owned by Nan dR Ne ill, Port a down.

The award for the champion goat went to Kerry Murphy from Stewartstown.
