Colvin celebrates 150th milestone as Irish girls complete whitewash

BELFAST Harlequins midfielder Lizzie Colvin celebrated her 150th international cap on a winning note in Glasgow yesterday as Ireland swept to a 5-1 victory over Scotland to complete a 3-0 series whitewash.

Former Ballymoney striker Katie Mullan, the Ireland captain, scored one of the goals and Pegasus player Shirley McCay had a hand in three of the others.

Ireland had beaten their hosts 1-0 on Thursday night and 6-2 on Saturday as they continue their build-up to the World Cup, scheduled for London next month.

However, they won’t be reading too much into the series as the Scots are ranked 18th in the world, two places lower than the Irish.

A more realistic measure of the team’s apparent progress will come later this week when they take on England in two internationals at the World Cup venue in London.

Mullan broke the deadlock in the 14th minute yesterday with a brilliant solo effort, beating two defenders and then firing a superb reverse stick shot into the roof of the net.

Nicci Daly set up Naomi Carroll for the second and McCay provided the assist for Hannah Matthews to make it three.

McCay then created the chance for Emily Beatty to convert a penalty corner early in the second half before the Scots pulled one back through Hanna McKie.

However, Ireland had the last word when McCay was again the provider for Beatty to get her second near the end.
