Police arrest two after motorist in his 60s dies in Co Down road crash

A MOTORIST in his 60s has died following a crash on the outskirts of Ballygowan in Co Down.

The accident happened on Wednesday night on the Comber Road.

Inspector Jonny Francey said: “Police received a report of a road traffic collision on the Comber Road involving a black BMW and a silver-coloured Proton Persona.

“Neither of the vehicles were carrying any passengers.

“The driver of the Proton, aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 22-yearold driver of the black BMW sustained minor injuries.

“He was subsequent­ly arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“He has since been released on bail, pending further police enquiries.

Police located a third vehicle — a black Volkswagen Golf — close to the scene which they suspect may also have been involved in the incident.

The driver of the Golf, a 20-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She remained in police custody last night.

“Anyone with informatio­n that they believe could assist our investigat­ion is asked to call the police in Bangor’s collision investigat­ion unit on the non-emergency 101 number,” he said.

Strangford Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong offered condolence­s to the family of the man who was killed.

“I’m sorry to hear that a gentleman has died following the crash on the Comber Road outside Ballygowan last night,” Mrs Armstrong said. “It’s awful news and I would like to extend my sympathy to his family and friends at this sad time.”

The identity of the driver who died has not yet been released by the authoritie­s.

The crash brings to 20 the number of people who have been killed on Northern Ireland’s roads so far this year.
