Champion Meara’s treble as he chases series leader

THE 2018 Nutt Travel MRA Ulster Motocross Championsh­ips produced a day of trebles for most of the classes at a hot dry Seaforde.

The Sport Insure Premier MX1 class champion, Loughbrick­land Kawasaki rider John Meara, had three gate to flag wins to narrow the gap to Championsh­ip leader Richard Bird from Lisburn on his KTM to 43 points.

Bird was second on the day while third placed Portavogie Honda rider Robert Hamilton also consolidat­ed his third in the Championsh­ip and is now only 11 points adrift of Meara.

The Thompson Leisure MX2 Premier Championsh­ip leader Jason Meara from Loughbrick­land had to give way to Glenn McCormick from Glenoe who powered to three straight wins in the class to close the gap to 11 points.

The Precise Protect Semi Expert class produced some excellent racing mixed in with the concurrent­ly run Premier MX1 with Comber man Johnny Presho winning two from three, a bad start ruining his second race,.

Ashley Allerton won the middle race, to finish only five points off the flying Presho who has cut Allerton’s lead to 11 points in the Championsh­ip.

In the Semi Expert MX2 class, backed by Gortnacarr­ow Tyre Services in associatio­n with Bridgeston­e, Rhys Graham on his KTM took the treble win from a mixed bag of race runers up, but Michael McAllister managed to grab the silver medal slot Closing in: John Meara on his way to a hat-trick of wins at Seaforde on Saturday

from Dollingsto­wn man William McBride.

In the Robinson Concrete Clubman MX1 class, Downpatric­k man Jordan Wade fired his Kawasaki to three wins with Championsh­ip rival Calvin McCorkell scoring three second places after a bad start on race 2, with Ciaran Boyle third overall and Thomas Murdoch fourth.

The Laverty Motocross Clubmans MX2 class was a battle of the youngsters with Markethill rider Scott Baily taking the overall win on his Yamaha from Donegal teenager Ivan Kerr and Robert Hunt third.
