Selfie snapper backs MP in dispute over dates
A MAN whose selfie became embroiled in the investigation into Ian Paisley says he hopes the MP will “bounce back”.
Belfast man Marty Adams took a snap with the North Antrim DUP MP in front of an ice cream van bearing the name ‘Robinsons’ on July 11, 2013.
He says he was subsequently contacted by Mr Paisley requesting a copy of the photo, which he emailed to him without knowing what it would be used for.
Mr Adams believes this image was then used as evidence the MP was in Northern Ireland and not Sri Lanka on the date in question.
Mr Paisley disputed the itinerary suggested by a Daily Telegraph report, claiming that his second Sri Lanka trip was “shorter than suggested by the newspaper”.
He told the parliamentary standards commissioner: “I recall attending a local celebration and having my photo taken at an ice cream truck called ‘Robinsons’.
“A local person (was) asking for a selfie at this, joking that the truck was named after my party leader.”
Mr Adams (44), who works with victims of historical abuse, said: “What he says is true, he was with me on that date. I saw him, beckoned him over and took a selfie in front of the ice cream van and I thought no more of it.
“I didn’t know when he requested the photo what it was about. I emailed it over.”
Mr Adams added: “I would support him on this issue, he gave an unequivocal apology and I believe he was very sincere.
“I hope he can overcome it.”
