Record order backlog for global aerospace industry

THE aerospace industry is experiencing the biggest backlog of orders on record.

New data released today by ADS, which represents the UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space sectors, has revealed that 14,327 aircraft are currently on the order books of jet manufacturers worldwide.

The industry is also seeing the largest backlog of engine orders with 26,068 on firm order.

The backlog includes 504 A220 aircraft, which are partly manufactured in Belfast. The former Bombardier C Series had a backlog of 384 orders before Airbus took a majority stake.

The European aerospace giant has received an additional 120 orders for A220-300 jets in recent weeks.

According to ADS, new records for deliveries were set during the first half of 2018.

Airbus, Boeing and Bombardier delivered a total of 693 aircraft between January and June, 28 more than last year.

June saw 165 commercial aircraft deliveries.

The value of 2018 deliveries so far, has been estimated by ADS to be worth up to £13bn to the UK aerospace industry.

ADS chief executive Paul Ever- itt said: “It is hugely encouraging to see the continued growth in demand for new aircraft and engines.

“This month at Farnborough International Airshow we saw deals worth $192bn announced helping to give the UK supply chain the confidence to invest in new capability and capacity.”
