Big spending Klopp won’t rule out more signings

- BY SAMUEL LOVETT

JURGEN Klopp has suggested Liverpool still need to cut down their squad but refused to rule out making any more signings, joking that he didn’t want to ruin the fun of transfer deadline day.

Liverpool have enjoyed a productive summer so far, having spent more than £160m on the likes of Alisson, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita — the latter of whom agreed to join the club last year.

The Reds have also moved on a number of their fringe players, including Emre Can and Danny Ward. Ben Woodburn, too, has been loaned out to Sheffield United for the season.

With the transfer window set to shut on Thursday at 5pm, Liverpool aren’t expected to make any more big-name signings.

But speaking in the wake of Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Napoli in Dublin, Klopp hinted the Merseyside club could be kept busy in the run-up to deadline day.

Asked about the possibility of any last-minute deals, the German said: “We will see what happens.

“I cannot kill your D-day show, people sit there in front of the television all day waiting.

“If any player from my team is available, then in every other situation in my life as a manager I would have bought all of them, to be honest. They are all fantastic boys, they are able to play fantastic football. In this moment, the squad would be too big, that’s true.

“But it’s not that that means for us that we give them for free or something like that, Liverpool is strong enough to keep all these players and then we deal with that. We are not there to make other teams stronger, that’s not our job.”

Meanwhile, Leicester have signed winger Rachid Ghezzal from Monaco.

The Foxes will pay an undisclosed fee for the 26-year-old Algeria international, who has agreed a four-year contract.

“I’m very excited and very happy to be here,” said Ghezzal.

“I know the coach from Lyon and this is where I want to be. It’s a good club and an ambitious one too.”

Elsewhere, Burnley have signed defender Ben Gibson from Middlesbrough for a joint club record fee of £15m.

The Clarets were the final Premier League club to make a signing this summer apart from Spurs, but a second is expected to arrive sooner rather than later after Joe Hart was left out of Manchester City’s side that contested the Community Shield yesterday.

The England goalkeeper, who missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup following a season-long loan with West Ham United last term, had a medical and is expected to seal a permanent move to Turf Moor, having been told by Pep Guardiola that he is not part of his plans for the new season.
