French rider not expected to survive Dundrod crash

A FRENCH rider critically injured at the Ulster Grand Prix on Saturday was still on life support in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital last night.

Fabrice Miguet (49), from Normandy, is not expected to recover from the injuries he sustained in a high-speed crash at the Joey’s Windmill section of the race course in Dundrod, Co Antrim.

Clerk of the course Noel Johnston said: “It is with much sadness that the Dundrod & District Motorcycle Club con- firms that while Fabrice Miguet remains on life support, we understand that the medical expectation is that he has sustained injuries that are unsurvivable.

“The 49-year-old rider from Normandy, France, was taken to the Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital following an incident at the Joey’s Windmill section of the course during the Superstock race at the Ulster Grand Prix on Saturday.

“Our thoughts are with Fabrice’s family, team and many friends at this difficult time.”

The highly-experienced Kawasaki/Optrimark Road Racing driver was a regular competitor in both the annual Ulster Grand Prix and the Isle of Man TT.

Mr Miguet also owns a motorcycle shop.

He was injured during the fourth lap of the Superstock race.

The MCE Ulster Grand Prix is billed as “the world’s fastest road race”.

It was also learned yesterday that English competitor Davey Todd (22) — who was hospitalised following injuries sustained in an incident during the first Superbike race — has been released.

He came off his powerful Suzuki machine at the Deer’s Leap section of the course.

Racing was later abandoned with three races remaining on the programme due to poor weather conditions at the course.

Two English riders — Gavin Lupton and Jamie Hodson — died last year after crashes at the Dundrod event.

Mr Hodson’s crash also happened at Joey’s Windmill — the same spot where Mr Miguet crashed.

French motorcycle magazine GP Racing said: “One of the greatest French road racing riders has left us.”
