Lurgan Blues chief calls for more of

GLENAVON manager Gary Hamilton wants to see more of the physical presence and power from front man Andrew Mitchell that proved too much for Warrenpoin­t Town.

Mitchell was magnificen­t in Glenavon’s 4-2 victory at Milltown on Saturday, scoring twice and creating goals for Mark Sykes and Stephen Donnelly as the Lurgan Blues picked up their first points of the season.

It was the type of individual performanc­e that brought back memories of former Glenavon striking hero Glenn Ferguson — dominating defenders with his strength in the air and skill on the ground and inspiring his side to success.

Hamilton was pleased to see Mitchell on top form and is keen for more of the same in the weeks ahead.

“I was delighted for Mitch. He sometimes doesn’t use his strength as much as he should because he is a big strong boy. When he uses it he is a real handful,” said Hamilton.

“He is a top striker and guarantees you 20 goals a season. He scored two against Warrenpoin­t and could have had three and he set up our first two goals in a strong performanc­e.”

After Glenavon had gone behind to a well taken Alan O’Sullivan effort, Mitchell took over and by half-time the visitors led 3-1. On 33 minutes the ex-Dungannon Swifts striker nodded Jonny Tuffey’s long kick into the path of Sykes who took the chance superbly. Three minutes later Mitchell crossed for Donnelly to tap home and then he deservedly opened his account for the campaign on 45 with a neat finish to complement Andy Hall’s astute pass.
