Tyrone woman Imelda to mix it on Bake Off
AN amateur baker from Co Tyrone is hoping to rise to the challenge after being selected as a contestant for this year’s The Great British Bake Off.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council countryside recreation officer Imelda McCarron (33), who learned to cook and bake with her mother, will be among the latest batch of bakers seeking to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in the hit Channel 4 series.
Imelda will be one of 12 new contestants in the show, hosted by Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig (right), which will return to TV screens next Tuesday.
Ulster Unionist MLA Rosemary Barton said that the entire community here would be backing Imelda to win.
“It’s a wonderful achievement to have someone from the area representing
Northern Ireland in The Great British Bake Off,” said Mrs Barton, who admitted she was “quite a fan” of the programme.
“To get chosen is a real honour, and that shows the wonderful talent that we have here in Northern Ireland,” she added.
“Imelda will have the support of the whole community in Co Ty- rone and right across the province.”
Meanwhile, Ballinamallard councillor Diana Armstrong said elected representatives would be only too happy to sample Imelda’s efforts.
“She would be very welcome to try out her goodies in the council buildings,” she laughed.
“It’s absolutely fantastic she has got through — and she should go out there and do us all proud.”
