Weather shouldn’t cloud Ould Lammas Fair too badly

- BY AINE McAULEY

BANK holiday monday will bring a mixture of scattered showers and sunshine.

Those heading to the Ould Lammas Fair, which is in full swing in Ballycastle, might be advised to bring waterproofs just in case — although the day isn’t expected to be a washout.

The Met Office predicts a sunny start to the day. But otherwise if will be often cloudy with one or two showers, mainly in the west, with fresh westerly winds in the north. The maximum temperature is expected to be 19C.

There’ll be plenty of dulse and yellowman to enjoy as stallholders gather for the fair, which attracts more than 200,000 people every year.

Widely regarded as the oldest event of its kind in Ireland, its horse trading roots are still evident at Fairhill Street in the town centre where traders converge to buy, sell and barter.

And from Castle Street to the seafront there’ll be no end to the event’s unique sights and sounds, which have enticed people to the town for over 400 years.

At the seafront, Naturally North Coast and Glens Artisan Market is a stand-out attraction, with a range of stalls selling the very best of handmade arts, crafts, food and drink.

Its new street food area provides the best place to enjoy a taste of its gourmet local produce in an unique al fresco dining experience. The fair also provides street entertainment and market stalls, trading, bartering, busking, amusements and street entertainment competitions.
