History repeating itself and Ireland will be a loser once again as UK splits from the European Union
WATCHING a recent BBC documentary on Henry VIII and his split from Rome, I was struck by the parallels with the UK’s current trials in its split from the Treaty of Rome.
European kings ruled at the behest of and were subservient to Rome. Henry determined to break with that. Sound familiar?
In Henry’s case it was the elite of the day, ie the monasteries and Catholic nobles loyal to Rome that tried at every turn to ferment dissent and thwart his policy.
Watching the programme one could imagine today’s Remainers in their shoes doing exactly the same, only today it is the EU Commission’s work they are doing rather than Rome’s.
Rome encouraged proxies France and Spain to war with Henry using Ireland through supported rebellion. Today the EU uses the Republic as a proxy to do its bidding. The Republic have experienced this before when they dared to vote against the EU.
They are being used like a ‘spanner in the works’ to hamper negotiations and they will be left with the consequences of a ‘no deal’ exit, just as Ireland was left after the failed rebellions in the 16th century.
That was clear in the remarks of French and German ministers who said it will be up to Ireland to sort out the border after Brexit.
Meanwhile there is the ridiculous ‘fear’ propaganda is poured out by a Remain-supporting media ably supported by members of the UK Government.
The EU pretends to negotiate while refusing to accept any compromise made by the UK and once again when the dust settles Ireland will be the loser.
Henry did split with Rome and that was the start of Britain’s rise to becoming one of the richest and most powerful countries in the world.
