Jason sweeps to success as group lands him his first job

- BY STAFF REPORTER

A YOUNG Co Down man with learning difficulties has been given his first paid job — and is following in his mum’s footsteps.

James Nelson from Bangor is a cleaner in Ards and North Down Borough Council following training and support from social enterprise NOW Group.

James (27) always wanted to follow in the footsteps of his late mum and become a cleaner.

However, not being able to read or write, he found traditional job search services didn’t work as he wasn’t able to complete application forms nor did he feel confident being interviewed.

Things changed when he was referred to NOW Group, a social enterprise that supports people with learning difficulties and autism into training and employment.

When a cleaning job with Mount Charles based in Bangor Town Hall was advertised James applied, prepping for hours beforehand with his Employment Officer. He was offered the job just hours after the interview.

James now works part-time hours, five days a week.

James said: “I was nervous starting the job because I didn’t know if people would like me or if I would know what to do, but everyone is really friendly and I love my job. I found it tiring at first but I like coming here every day and I know the place like the back of my hand now!

“My family are pleased, especially because I am following in Mum’s footsteps.”

NOW is holding an information day on Thursday, September 13 between 4-7pm for anyone interested in finding out more about their services. It will be held at 15-17 Grosvenor Road, Belfast, BT12 4GN. Find out more at www. nowgroup.org.
