Belfast man listed among favourites for top TSB role
GERRY Mallon, the former chief executive at Danske Bank in Belfast and current Tesco Bank chief executive, has been tipped as a possible replacement for Paul Pester, who left TSB on Tuesday.
Mr Mallon was named on a prediction list posted on Forbes’ website shortly after Mr Pester stepped down.
Mr Pester’s departure on Tuesday came after a seven-year stint at the top, which was marred by IT woes in April that left up to 1.9 million people who use TSB’s digital and mobile banking locked out of their bank accounts.
Mr Pester left the troubled bank with a payout of nearly £1.7m and now the industry is speculating on who will take his place, with Mr Mallon, who recently moved from Ulster Bank UK in Dublin to Tesco Bank at the beginning of this year, named as one to watch.
Mr Mallon joined Tesco Bank after a year-and-a-half with Ulster Bank. Prior to that he held an eight-year role at the helm of Danske Bank UK in Belfast.
Speaking about his unplanned move to Tesco Bank, Mr Mallon told the Belfast Telegraph’s sister publication, Ulster Business: “I wasn’t interested in a move and wasn’t looking for a move. At that level, you get approached...”
The Belfast man, who is also chairman of the Irish Football Association, joins 11 other top bank chiefs touted as favourites for the TSB role.
