I’m ready for Britain’s finest, says McComb

SEAN McComb says he wants to be fast-tracked into facing the best super-lightweights in Britain having made an impressive start to his professional career.

The ebullient Belfast man chalked up a second successive stoppage in Birmingham on Saturday night on the undercard of Amir Khan’s points win over Samuel Vargas. McComb proved too hot for journeyman Lesther Cantillano of Spain, stopping him in the second round.

The victory came just three weeks after he stopped Reynaldo Mora on his debut at Windsor Park and he now looks to make it a hat-trick of wins at the Titanic Exhibition Centre on October 5.

“Two wins and two knockouts, you can’t get much better than that, so I feel I’m progressing very well and it’s not just in the fights but my sparring as well. I’m in there with guys who have had a lot more fights than me and handling them no problem,” said McComb.

“That gives me the belief that I’m a match for anyone in Britain but it’s just a case of learning my trade and getting the experience I need over six, eight and 10 rounds. I’m hoping that I’ll have a couple of six rounders before Christmas and then push on to eight and 10 rounds and title fights next year.

“I can see how important it is to pace yourself in the pro game, it’s not like the amateurs when everything is a hundred miles an hour. I’m learning to do that, I’m already sparring six rounds at a good pace.”

As for his victory on Saturday night, McComb was happy with his performance but admits that he still has plenty to work on.

He added: “I was pleased with the win but I know I made some mistakes, I was smothering my work at times rather than taking a half step back and letting the punches go. But I think with better opposition I will be even better.”

Also on the Birmingham bill, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Steven Donnelly also made it two out of two with a points win over Miguel Aguilar of Nicaragua.

Former world champion Khan, who got off the floor to beat Vargas, is now setting his sights on a showdown with either Manny Pacquiao or Sheffield rival Kell Brook before the end of the year.

Khan says: “Both fights are massive but Manny is someone I’d love to fight first. I’ve always wanted that fight.

“Manny and I trained together and he’s a southpaw. I’ve got a 100% record against southpaws and that would be a more technical, tactical fight.

“Let’s see what happens. At the end of the day we’re businessmen, and we do what makes financial sense.”
